Bettas ~ Teal Metalic Plakat x Pink/Purple Marble Plakat ~ 4/18/08

Well this one is no good, at least not good in the blogging area, I didn’t write anything down for dates or anything! I’m guessing, darn sure it’s a good guess, but guess all the same that the spawning date was April 18th. I had them together over night and the next morning there were eggs. Took out the mom and gave her peace and quiet, she looked great though, no fins ripped or any sign of damage. The male did a great job at takeing care of the babies till they were free swimming. Then he went back into his own home. The babies were so tiny! my goodness, I still can’t get over how small they are when just hatched! They fed off microworms, decaps bbs and some fry powder food that I feed my baby angels. They are now doing great! I moved them at about 2 months into a 20g where they continue to grow. There’s about 30 of them in there at last guess. Most are showing color now and all have stripes (I think those fade right?) All area also following Dad’s coloration and showing various shades of blues and teals. So far I have not seen one that’s going Mom’s coloring.

It’s now 6/27/08 and I’ve already got people that are waiting for them to get a bit older before I’ll sell. Mom however is sick. I’m not sure what’s wrong with her, but am working on making her better with the help of the betta experts that I’ve found (thanks everyone!!!) I’m hoping that she gets better as I’m partial to her as my first mom.

Enjoy!!!

7/28 ~ Well! I’ve got about 20 juvies that are just over 3 months now. I’ve started moving the 5 largest into their own containers now (I’ve got 1 gal vases they are going into till selling) The rest are still in the 20. I started to see a bit of agressiveness from the larger ones, so it was time. I’ll post pics of them soon:) They are coloring up very nicely and shoing their stripes. I haven’t gotten close enough yet to see if i can tell m from f and since they are short finned, that may prove to be harder till the females get out the egg spot. We’ll see, but they are doing great! They are eating a mix of froz cyclops, decaps bbs, betta flakes (crushed), and the angels plus fry starter size 2. Everyone’s doing great!

8/12/08 - Alright, they are just short of 4 months and ready to be sold! There are officially 25 juvies all ready to go. Thanks to those at the Betta Breeders Forum I now know how to sex them:) (short finned and all). now thing about them is (and a huge lesson learned by me) I fed them micros most of their growing up which caused them to bottom feed a lot. So a few of them do not have their ventricals. This is not a genetic problem, so they are still breedable. I’m going to keep a few of the more purple ones to try to get that a deeper color. But the rest are ready to go! because of the vent problem, those that are missing them will go for $5.00 each, the ones with both will go for $10 each (as was the price of their parents when I bought them) I’ll be getting their photos up online soon and shipping stuff and things, so keep an eye out! and thanks again to the betta breeders!
